Insider tips from the owners of this suite

By Bill Petrin

This guide is written by the owners of this suite, not by a travel agency or the resort's marketing team. The goal is to share what we actually do when we stay here - where we eat, where we shop, what is worth the drive, and what the resort brochure does not tell you.

The resort has five restaurants and delivers a complete experience without leaving the property. That said, Truckee (20 minutes north) and the Lake Tahoe North Shore (20 minutes south) are both worth the drive. Truckee in particular has excellent restaurants and craft breweries that are significantly better than anything on resort for a sit-down dinner.

BEFORE YOU ARRIVE

Three Things To Know

Stock Up at Safeway Truckee on the Way In

The Village Market at Palisades Tahoe is convenient but expensive for a full shop - it is a convenience store, not a grocery store. Safeway in Truckee is right on SR-267, 20 minutes from the resort. Stop there on arrival.

Fly into Reno, Not Sacramento

Reno-Tahoe Airport (RNO) is 45 minutes from the resort and significantly less crowded than Sacramento or the Bay Area airports. If RNO works for your flight options, it is almost always the better choice.

Book Spa Treatments Immediately

The Everline spa fills up fast on peak weekends - sometimes weeks in advance. Book your treatments the same day you finalize travel dates. Same goes for Six Peaks Grille dinner reservations and golf tee times.

MUST-KNOW PRACTICAL DETAILS

Chain control on SR-89

The road into Olympic Valley is subject to chain control during winter storms. Non-4WD/AWD vehicles must carry chains and may be required to install them. Check Caltrans Quickmap (quickmap.dot.ca.gov) before departing.

Cell service

Verizon has the best coverage in the valley. AT&T and T-Mobile can be spotty inside the resort buildings. Wi-Fi is available throughout the resort.

Altitude

Olympic Valley sits at 6,200 feet. Some guests experience mild altitude effects on arrival. Stay hydrated and take it easy the first day if you are coming from sea level.
