Truckee, California

The best mountain town near Olympic Valley - 20 minutes from the resort

By Bill Petrin

Truckee is a historic Sierra Nevada mountain town 20 minutes north of Everline Resort on SR-267. It has the best concentration of restaurants, craft breweries, and independent shops near Olympic Valley, and is the most practical destination for grocery shopping, a dinner out, or exploring beyond the resort.

MOUNTAIN TOWN

Why Truckee Is Worth the Drive

The on-resort restaurants at Everline are good, but Truckee's dining scene has significantly more variety - and several options that are genuinely excellent for a sit-down dinner. The 20-minute drive on SR-267 is straightforward and the town has a genuine historic character that is not manufactured for tourists.

Downtown Truckee centers on Donner Pass Road, the original Lincoln Highway crossing the Sierra Nevada. Victorian-era commercial buildings, an active Southern Pacific railroad line running through the center of town, and independent businesses rather than national chains give it a different feel from most ski-resort towns.

  • Best restaurant concentration near the resort
  • FiftyFifty Brewing - nationally distributed craft beer
  • Truckee Brewing Company taproom downtown
  • Safeway - the nearest full-size grocery store (20 min)
  • Historic downtown on the original Lincoln Highway
  • Amtrak California Zephyr stop (SF to Chicago route)
  • Independent outdoor gear and clothing shops
  • Hardware store and practical supplies

Safeway Truckee

The nearest full-size grocery store to Everline Resort. Located at 10093 Donner Pass Road in Truckee, right along SR-267 on the way into the valley. A complete Safeway with deli, bakery, pharmacy, and a decent wine and spirits section.

Stop here on arrival rather than relying on the Village Market at Palisades Tahoe, which has a limited selection and higher prices. Hours approximately 6 AM to midnight daily. [OWNER TO FILL IN: confirm current hours]

Craft Beer

FiftyFifty Brewing Company is the standout - a nationally distributed brewery with a taproom on Bridge Street. Their Eclipse bourbon barrel stout has a dedicated following. The taproom is low-key and family-friendly.

Truckee Brewing Company on Donner Pass Road is the other option, with a larger taproom and more of a pub atmosphere. Both are worth a visit on a Truckee day trip.

TIPS

Tips for a Truckee Day Trip

Stop on Arrival

The most efficient approach: stop at Safeway Truckee on the way into the valley (it sits right on SR-267). Stock up on arrival rather than making a special trip mid-stay.

Book Dinner in Advance

Popular Truckee restaurants fill on weekends. For a Saturday dinner reservation, call or book online 3-5 days ahead. [OWNER TO FILL IN: recommend specific restaurants]

Winter: Check SR-267

SR-267 crosses Brockway Summit at 7,200 feet and is subject to chain control during storms. Carry chains in winter even if your vehicle is AWD, and check Caltrans Quickmap before departing.
